We believe that children learn best by doing. Knowledge is not something that is given to children. They acquire it through playful interaction with objects and people. Child-initiated, child-directed, teacher-supported play is an essential component of our two and three-year-old programs.
The school provides a balance of active and quiet play, indoor and
outdoor activities, and individual and group learning experiences.
Our teachers guide this process by providing an environment with
stimulating and challenging materials and activities for all
children. Then the teachers closely observe to see what each child
understands and pose additional challenges to further stimulate
learning in a developmentally appropriate manner for each child.
Children learn basic shapes and colors, the alphabet, numbers 1-10, seasons and the calendar through quality play activities. They develop fine motor skills by tracing, cutting, pasting, matching, puzzle play and bulding with blocks. Children learn social skills, good manners, self-confidence, sharing and respecting cultural differences through interactions with classmates and teachers. Our teachers stimulate cognitive and memory skills through classification and sequencing exercises.
Our program provides developmentally appropriate learning
experiences in language arts, math, art, music, science and
computer. Our teachers use classroom learning centers,
teacher initiated themes and hands-on material integrated with
playful activities. Explicitly, our language arts program provides
playful yet definite experience for reading readiness, letter names,
the alphabet, phonics and rhyming. Children learn to count 1-20 and
write 1-10 in math by using manipulatives. Sorting activities are
used to learn beginning math concepts.
Music, rhythmic movement and art provide gross motor development along with an appreciation of aesthetics. Our hands-on science program cultivates observational skills and exposes the natural wonders of our world. Children develop confidence in using technology through our computer program.
Our preschool is a ministry of St. George's Episcopal Church. As such, the preschool is a ministry of a community rooted in the Anglican tradition of being open and welcoming to all cultures and faiths. Our children participate in weekly worship services with our chaplain. The children learn prayers, Bible stories, songs, Christian values and to love God and all people.
Our preschool is open Monday through Friday, from 7 am to
6 pm, except for our scheduled holiday openings and closings.
Our flexible enrollment policy for two and three-year-olds allows parents to change participation status as long as written notification is received 30 days prior to the change.
Our pre-kindergarten program operates from 8 am to 3 pm, five days a week, on the same school calendar as St. George's Academy. Before care and after care are available as well as holiday care and Summer Camp.
