The Kindergarten Language Arts Program offers a systematic and explicit approach to reading and all of reading's associated components. The essential concept the program offers is print awareness, phonemic awareness, comprehension and phonics. Specific techniques and strategies are incorporated in the writing segment in Language Arts. The program focuses on writing processes and skills, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, usage and mechanics.
The Kindergarten Mathematics Program offers a comprehensive curriculum utilizing a variety of methods. Concentration on numbers, estimation, geometry, measurement, analysis, probability and reasoning are the focus. Art, manipulative and music are used for understanding and visualization of these concepts.
The Social Studies curriculum consists of a variety of investigational learning experiences. The study of ecology (life sciences), resources, good citizenship, temporal order, environments and governments will be explored. Furthermore, the understanding of the history of events, people and places are developed through this comprehensive program.
The Kindergarten Science curriculum provides a variety of methods for understanding how things work, accurate observation, analyzing data and critical thinking. The use of these skills will provide practice and understanding of concepts in life, earth, physical and health science.
Students in kindergarten are developing coordination and motor skills. It is important at this level that proper techniques are taught correctly. Students play in a game or drill that focuses on 1 or 2 skills that will help reinforce proper technique. Students also learn to share and take turns to help emphasize good sportsmanship and teamwork. The sports and activities taught at this level are volleyball, flag football, soccer, basketball, t-ball, softball, games and fitness.
Kindergarten art encourages the student to express ideas and experiences visually while manipulating various art materials. The emphasis is on the process rather than the product. The student is motivated through discussions, illustrations, demonstrations and other verbal and visual stimuli. Art appreciation is encouraged by the recognition of the worth of one's own work and of the art of the peer group. Artworks of famous artists are discussed and sometimes used as motivation.
Kindergarten music continues developing basic concepts and skills introduced in pre-kindergarten. Slightly more complex rhythmic exposure and increased melodic range are characteristic musical experiences.
The kindergarten student learns keyboarding with 3 different keyboarding packages as well as oral work with the teacher. Students learn simple sentence work and interact with the teacher in their writing, using ideas from regular classroom, home and local environment activities.
Chapel is the foundation of religious life at St. George's. Through music, prayer and scripture we give thanks and praise to the living God who blesses and sustains us. Twice a week we begin our day in the chapel to affirm that our lives, our learning and our friendships are gifts from God given for us to develop to their fullest potential. Student participation and leadership in chapel reinforces the concept that worship is an offering of the whole community.
